LONGBAUGH FESTIVAL
- April 7-9

Presented by Comcast and Willamette Week!

The Longbaugh returns for its second year at the Clinton - with three days of independent, though-provoking and entertaining cinema.

FRIDAY, APRIL 7

7pm
NEIGHBOR 13
Yasuo Inoue
115 minutes

The popular Japanese comic series from manga creator Santa Inoue comes to brutal life in this psychological horror film. Shido Nakamura stars as a disturbed young man, victimized as a child, who develops multiple personalities. When the bully who tormented him in his youth moves into his building, things begin to take a gruesome turn for Neighbor No. 13.

9:15pm
ELECTRIC APRICOT
Les Claypool
85 minutes

Not since Marti DeBergi’s brilliant examination of seminal British heavy-metal band Spinal Tap has there been a more insightful look at a music groups. Les Claypool goes behind the scenes with up-and-coming jam band Electric Apricot.
Comprising an eccentric group of Bay Area musicians, Electric Apricot has struggled on the jam-band scene as it looks to find its place among such hallowed groups as the Grateful Dead and Phish. But the road to success—not to mention the legendary music festival Festeroo—is bumpy indeed. And while their song “Hey, Are You Going to Burning Man?” is destined to become a classic, first they must get it recorded.
Prepare to laugh out loud as Claypool, best known for his stellar work as bass player in Primus, proves he is equally adept at comedy. Claypool’s writing and direction are only matched by his hilarious performance as Electric Apricot drummer-singer Lapland Miclovich. While many filmmakers have tried to duplicate the This Is Spinal Tap formula, few have gotten it more right than Claypool.

Les Claypool and producer Jason McHugh are both scheduled to appear.

SATURDAY, APRIL 8

1pm
ROBOTS ARE BLUE

Bill Sebastian
7 minutes

Robots are an everyday part of life in the future, but they are not supposed to have emotions or fondness for things like poetry—and that’s where the problems begin.

ELEPHANT SHOES
Christos Sourligas
79 minutes

Do you believe in love at first sight? Neither do Alexis (Stacie Morgain Lewis) and Manny (Greg Shamie), but that doesn’t protect them from what is about to happen when they randomly meet on the street. Over the next 12 hours, the unsuspecting couple will spend a lifetime together. But since Alexis is visiting from out of town, they can see the end of their affair with each tick of the clock. The palpable chemistry between Lewis and Shamie drives Christos Sourligas’ endearing romantic comedy.

2:45 pm
STAR DREAMS

Robert Nichol
87 minutes

Over the past three decades, thousands of crop circles have appeared all over the world. What do they mean? Are they forms of communication from any life form? Are the unexplained acts of nature? Are they elaborate hoaxes? Robert Nichol’s probing documentary attempts to unravel the mystery behind crop circles through interviews with researchers, and with amazing photography of these complex images that mysteriously appear.

4:45 pm
HORROR BUSINESS

Christopher Garetano
82 minutes

Don’t be fooled by the title—Christopher Garetano’s insightful documentary is more than just a behind-the-scenes look at the world of low-budget, independent horror films. This is a look at the go-for-broke world of guerrilla filmmakers (these guys just happen to make scary movies). Garetano attempts to find out what drives these people when things like common sense—and in some cases a deficit of talent—tell them to stop. Along the way, we get to see an eccentric cast of filmmakers in action, including American Movie’s Mark Borchardt, who returns to filmmaking for the first time since his infamous film Coven.

6 :45 pm

PUNK LOVE

Nick Lyon
96 minutes

Chad Lindberg and Emma Bing star as two lost souls looking for salvation in this darkly stylish drama set in the grimy, rain-soaked streets of Portland’s underbelly. Battling the demons of their drug addiction and the violent world they’re trying to escape, these lovers seemed doomed from the start. But the cruel hand of fate often makes for the best love stories.

Director in attendance.

SUNDAY, APRIL 9

3pm
LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT

Thomas Gibson
90 minutes

1980: Ronald Reagan was just elected president, the crack cocaine epidemic had yet to sweep America, and hip-hop was still in its infancy. As the decade moved forward—amid the Iran-Contra affair, AIDS, and black-on-black violence—growing disparity ravaged this nation. And through it all hip-hop was there to report on the way things really were in America. Featuring profound interviews with rappers, intellectuals and politicians ranging from Chuck D to Amiri Baraka to Larry Flynt, Thomas Gibson’s controversial documentary looks back on the last two decades of United States history from the unique perspective of a culture and community that represented the bottom of society’s barrel. The result is a document of remarkable honesty and brutality. Presented in collaboration with the Hip-Hop Association.

5pm
BLING

Kareem Edouard
11 minutes

Expensive jewelry—especially diamonds—has become one of the ultimate status symbols in the rap industry. But the harsh reality of the diamond industry, especially in the blood-soaked nation of Sierra Leone, is something that needs to be examined—not only by rappers, but by everyone.

HIP HOP COLONY

Michael Wanguhu
93 minutes

Hip-hop is arguably the most influential culture of the past 20 years. Born on the streets of the Bronx, hip-hop and rap music have spread throughout the world. Michael Wanguhu’s thoughtful documentary examines the influence of hip-hop in the African nation of Kenya, where it started as little more than American fad, but quickly ignited a social revolution. By merging elements of traditional American hip-hop with their own culture, Kenyans created the hip-hop subculture known as genge music, which helped manifest a newfound pride within a nation still feeling the effects of British colonial rule. Presented in collaboration with the Hip-Hop Association.

THE DOCUMENTARY HIT OF SUNDANCE 2006!

But when a new schools Superintendent arrives from Chicago, the administrators of the scholarship become concerned over the increasingly "liberal" direction of the schools. The conflict between the old-time loggers and the "urban immigrants" escalates dramatically, and the scholarship administrators deliver an ultimatum: either the superintendent leaves, or the scholarship is withdrawn, leaving the town's children without money for college.

BENEFIT FOR SHAC7 and JOSH HARPER
- May 28

* Bands:
- Divining Rods: local legends
- Eclectic Bastards: North Carolina’s master mix of fun and feist
- Juha: hiphop vegan anarchist, groom of god and pioneer of gothic soul

* Video:
Refusing to Be Silent: An Interview with Josh Harper, SHAC7 defendant* Speakers: on the history & status of the SHAC campaign and the larger legal ramifications
6 people and one organization, Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty [SHAC], have
been convicted under the Animal Enterprise Protection Act ... for running a website and speaking out against Huntingdon Life Sciences' [HLS] torture and
murder of 500 animals a day. SHAC has been successful in persuading hundreds of companies affiliated with, invested in or working with Huntingdon Life Sciences to break connections. They have hit HLS where it hurts: their wallet.
Methods used include electronic civil disobedience, black faxing (oh for the
love of toner!) and phone calls explaining the absurdity and horror that goes on inside HLS. For this, the SHAC7 defendants are going to federal prison.

--On March 2, the Bush administration dealt yet another blow to the First
Amendment, as the SHAC 7 were found guilty of multiple federal felonies for advocating the closure of the notorious animal-testing lab Huntingdon Life Sciences. Now, all six activists face years in federal prison. All six of the defendants are currently under house arrest while awaiting sentencing on June 13th.

--Not only is this conviction an appalling miscarriage of justice for the defendants, but it also demonstrates the erosion of free speech protections
and is part of a politically motivated attack on the animal rights movement in particular. This is the first time anyone has ever been tried under the Animal Enterprise Protection Act of 1992 (formerly known as the Animal Enterprise
Terrorism Act), and the convictions set a nightmarish precedent for animal protection campaigners throughout the country.

--This is a landmark case. Common opinion is that it is the first of many and
will be used against other organizations. Don't wait until they get around to
targeting you. The SHAC7 are challenging their convictions in appeal, even as they face certain time in federal prison while doing so. Their success or failure will quite literally be yours if you're fighting on the side of life and compassion, against the powers of death and disenfranchisement. Color, 1995. 80 minutes.

James Westby’s critically acclaimed no-budget thriller Bloody Mary
returns to the big screen in a new, never-before-seen version.
Prepared especially for the inaugural Longbaugh Film Festival, this taut and funny homage to B-movies is now several minutes shorter, but still as bloody as ever. Painstakingly transferred
frame-by-frame from a scratchy 16mm print to the consumer-grade
mini dv format, Bloody Mary was tightened by its director to reflect the vision that he thinks he should have had when the movie was first
released.

ACCLAIM FOR BLOODY MARY:

“A diabolical thriller in the tradition of Blood Simple.” --
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

“Only an asshole would miss this movie!” --
NY Underground Film Festival

“Audacious Bloody Mary is a stylish, unpredictable
thriller.” --
Paula Nechak, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

BEST OF THE FEST

THE COAT ROOM

Director will be in attendance for Q & A following the film.

James Cotton (Patrick Carrico) hates his
life, job, and girlfriend. In a vain attempt to sober
up and make a numb life for himself, he takes a job in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. His first day on the job he's placed in the coat room with Claire (Claire
Bromwell) whose sarcastic and hardened personality manages to pierce James's lifeless veneer. James's budding crush on the young woman is enough to rope him into a series of scams she has planned for the day in order to make enough money to move away. Under an
onslaught of odd museum patrons and caricatures of the young and hip art crowd, James is powerless to ease the awful pain of existence in a rhetorical world. Claire's life of impulsive action without thought
forces James to confront both her lies and his own.
Does James have what it takes to change his life? Can he find a reason to exist in this overwhelmingly futile world?

PSYCHOPATHIA SEXUALIS
- June 16-21

U.S., 2006
Bret Wood
102 minutes

Employing a complex multi-narrative
structure, Psychopathia Sexualis dramatizes case
histories of turn-of-the-century sexual deviance,
drawn from the pages of Richard von Krafft-Ebing's
notorious medical text. Among the cases are a sexually repressed man who discovers an unhealthy appetite for
blood; a homosexual man who submits himself to a
doctor who promises to 'cure' his condition; and a
masochist who hires a pair of corseted prostitutes to enact a most peculiar performance. In the final
chapter, a woman who has spent her life suppressing her lesbian desires is hired to tutor a sexually curious young woman. These stories are bound together by the thread of an ambitious doctor who not only
studies the patients, but uses them as pawns and
playthings.

THE CENTURY PLAZA
- June 22

U.S., 2005
Eric Lahey
90 minutes

ONE NIGHT ONLY!

DIRECTOR IN ATTENDANCE FOR Q&A FOLLOWING BOTH SCREENINGS!

Sandwiched in the heart of downtown Portland, Oregon, the Century Plaza was at one time as elegant as it was esteemed. Indeed, businessmen, and those simply passing through the city, made a point to patronize this five-story complex that was built at the turn of the twentieth century. Sadly, as the years gave way to the development of high-rise and commercial lodging, the Plaza began a downward spiral.

Director Eric Lahey took up residence at The Century Plaza Hotel to document this forgotten fragment of society. The untold stories of this nebulous culture slowly unfold as he wanders his urban enclave. For some, The Century Plaza is a meeting place, a safe haven for the exchange or abuse of illicit drugs; for others it signifies a luxurious break from the streets and a heated room and bed. The plaza affords refuge and survival. Stories unravel of individuals gripped with mental illness, drug addiction, and disease. Through spontaneous conversations, their captivating tales and diverse personalities will draw your attention, and engross you in their private world.

THE BIG BUY: Tom Delay's Stolen Congress
- June 23 - 29

U.S., 2006
Mark Birnbaum
Jim Schermbeck
90 minutes

It's the story of one of the most blatant power grabs in American history, and how a District Attorney in Texas turned out to be the biggest threat to the national DeLay Machine. The film is a warning about how easy it is for American democracy to be hijacked by a combination of relentless ambition and corporate millions. It makes the case that DeLay built a "custom-made Congress" that is still providing votes for his agenda.
